Chelsea vs Liverpool - Premier League: Live score, team news and updates as Arne Slot's men look to bounce back from two defeats in a row

2 weeks ago 8

Follow Daily Mail Sport's live blog for the latest score, team news and updates as Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, with Oliver Holt and Lewis Steele reporting from the ground.

Super Saturday night

Cheers, Lewis.

Boy, am I excited for this one. I mean, it surely has to be better than the 3pm games I just covered.

Not to say they were boring, but... they were.

Both sides have been in poor form, so who knows what is going to happen at the Bridge tonight, but Chelsea and Liverpool have provided fireworks in recent years when they have faced off. I'm hoping for the same today.

Hopefully, we are entertained.

Warm-up snaps

The players have been out getting warm at Stamford Bridge. They need to, too - I am freezing.

My trusty Apple weather app says it's 14 degrees here, but 'feels like' eight!

And on that note, it's time for me to pass you over to another trusty asset in my colleague, Harry Bamforth, who will take you through the game.

Enjoy!

Smicer: 'People expect Liverpool to be perfect'

Vladimir Smicer, former Liverpool midfielder, speaking to BoyleSports:

Time brings more pressure, and I can feel expectation from people around me that Liverpool must be perfect. The people expect Liverpool to be perfect, and so far, we are not perfect.
So far, we have won a lot of games in the last 10 minutes and we are conceding goals that we shouldn't concede. But this is the beauty of the sport.
Fans thought when you signed Isak he would be the best in the game, but look at Manchester United, for example, they have been building their team for the last 10 years with new players and they can't get it right.
It's not easy, but I'm still confident that this is just the start of the season. Just don't panic and give the players time.
However, they need to look forward and win the challenge when the season is over. I know there are still a lot of games to go and it's important for them to focus on what they need to do.

Liverpool travel chaos

For the second time in a week - after issues outside the ground before the Galatasaray game - Liverpool fans have had problems getting to the actual football match today.

Reports from the Athletic suggest the storm has caused a lot of train issues and alternative routes have been needed.

Hopefully everyone heading that way made it on time!

Crouch: 'We are looking at Wirtz with £100million glasses'

By Lewis Browning

Peter Crouch, former Liverpool striker, speaking to the Daily Mail at the launch of Paddy’s Sportsbook at The Hippodrome Casino:

I went through a tough time with 18 games before I scored a goal for Liverpool. I was playing well but just couldn't score. I think the same with Florian Wirtz.
You can what you like but he is a talented footballer. It's hard to come straight in, settle and come straight in firing especially with the price tag.
If he came through the youth team we would be saying how good he is. We are looking through it with £100million glasses. I like to take the person as a footballer and say he is a good footballer. There is no doubt.

Breaking:Liverpool no longer top

By Lewis Browning

As the full time whistle is blown at the Emirates, Liverpool have, at least momentarily, lost their top spot in the Premier League.

They are instead replaced by Arsenal, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka scoring for the Gunners in their win over West Ham in north London this afternoon.

Liverpool will go back top if they win here, but they may well be up against it!

'It's a big one for Chelsea'

Chelsea have just run out for the warm-up, introduced as 'your world champions'. That's as maybe but they are also 'your team languishing in ninth place in the league without a win in three games'.
This is a big one for them and coach Enzo Maresca.

Squawka stats pack

By Lewis Browning

Our friends at Squawka have once again provided a stats pack ahead of tonight. What good guys.

The numbers are very, very similar. Like, very similar.

You can see how Liverpool have created more chances per 90 this season, but the goals scored, goals against and xG are almost identical.

I'm hoping that means we're in for a thriller!

Slot: 'The margins are so small'

By Lewis Browning

Arne Slot, Liverpool manager:

If the reaction is after you lose against [Crystal] Palace you lose another game, you can argue if that is positive. But I saw a team that wanted to try, from the first second until the last second, everything to get a result.

Different to the Palace game, we won much more second balls, we were – like in the Palace game – close to a result.

I've said many times that last season the margins are so small, and that's the same this season again and we are trying to find the way that is not about luck or bad luck or is not about a set-piece goal scored or against.

Maresca: 'It has been complicated'

By Lewis Browning

Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:

I think we started very, very well in terms of results and performance. The first four or five games and then probably the rest of the games, we didn't get the points that we wanted for sure, but we already analysed the reason why.
Again, I think most of the games where we didn't get the points is because they were games very complicated for us in terms of, unfortunately, red cards. But no doubt that also the injury situation, we have at this moment I think eight players out.
So it's a mixed combination, but we don't have any doubt that slowly, slowly we're going to be again where we need to be.

Players in the house

By Lewis Browning

Both the home and away players have arrived at Stamford Bridge, welcomed by a blue carpet and lots of excited fans.

Liverpool look in good spirits despite their back-to-back losses. Chelsea have arguably nothing to lose.

'The pressure will be on Isak soon'

Arne Slot has gone back to basics. The Premier League-winning midfield of Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai are starting together for just the second team this season.
The first time was the first half of the Merseyside Derby - the best 45 minutes of Liverpool's season. Florian Wirtz is only on the bench, which is a big call but maybe the correct one after a bruising week for the £116million man.
Alexander Isak gets the nod and, although he has not been fit, the pressure will be on if he does not open his Premier League account for the club soon.

Star men missing

By Lewis Browning

So both sides are without key men tonight.

For Chelsea, it's the very main man in Cole Palmer who is the headline absentee. He's got a groin issue, and Enzo Maresca has said that the Blues are assessing the best port of call in how to approach his recovery.

Trevoh Chalobah also missing out through suspension, while Liam Delap and Levi Colwill are among the long-term absentees.

For Liverpool, they will be relieved that Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa are fit enough to start, but Alisson is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an issue in midweek.

Breaking:Liverpool team news: Wirtz BENCHED

By Lewis Browning

Mohamed Salah is back in the Liverpool team after being benched in midfield, and Alexander Isak also starts, with Hugo Ekitike on the bench.

Looks like Conor Bradley will be at right back with Dominik Szoboszlai in an advanced role.

Breaking:Chelsea team news: Garnacho STARTS

By Lewis Browning

A makeshift Chelsea side, but they can indeed get one out.

Josh Acheampong comes into the defence, with Reece James seemingly in midfield.

It looks like Enzo Fernandez will play in attacking midfield, flanked by Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho - who makes his first Premier League start for the club since joining Manchester United.

Joao Pedro is fit enough to lead the line.

Reds look to bounce back at The Bridge

By Lewis Browning

Goooood afternoon one and all and welcome to Daily Mail Sport's live coverage of Chelsea vs Liverpool in the Premier League!

It's a big one today - and now just because of the size of the two teams in action.

Liverpool are looking to avoid a third defeat in a row - yes, a third! - in the capital this evening. After losses against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, people have been suggesting something is wrong - and today will go a long way to answering whether it is.

For Chelsea, it's been a mixed season so far. The lost last time out in the league, but did win in midweek.

I think anything that doesn't involve a red card for the Blues today will be a success...

Anyway, no time to natter - team news is in!
