A group of Manchester United legends got together to watch the Manchester derby on Sunday - but will have had their hands over their faces following the performance.

The first Manchester derby of the season took place on Sunday afternoon at the Etihad, and it was the blue side of the city that took the bragging rights with a routine 3-0 win to try and kickstart their season.

It had been a tough start to the campaign for Pep Guardiola's side, who had lost two of their first three league matches, but they bounced back in fine fashion in their first match after the international break.

Phil Foden and Erling Haaland were on the scoresheet, with the latter finding the back of the net twice in a game that would have been a hard watch for United fans.

But not just United fans - their former players too. Supporters have longed for a return to the glory days that saw the likes of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes in action - and that trio and more watched on on Sunday.

Ferdinand took to social media to share a snap of a group of Red Devils legends watching the match in South Korea - but they simply watched their old side get thrashed.

Ferdinand shared that he was excited on social media, but ended up watching his former side lose 3-0 against their local rivals

In what appeared to be in a hotel in the Asian Country, Ferdinand was seen sat next to former United midfielder Michael Carrick.

To the left of Ferdinand was Paul Scholes, next to him was Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Ferdinand's former centre back partner Nemanja Vidic was in the corner.

The group were in South Korea to play in a legends match, which saw Rooney steal the show with a fine goal in a match where a group of forwards took on a group of defenders. Also in action were the likes of Steven Gerrard and Gareth Bale.

After the game it was time for some down time, but it didn't go the way the ex-United players wanted, and Ferdinand made his thoughts known on social media.

At half time, he posted: 'Sloppy goal to conceded [sic]. Opportunities around their box but lacking quality in final 3rd. Positives - Pressed well at times...'

At 3-0, meanwhile, he shared: 'Wow. What am I seeing,' accompanied by a hiding emoji.

Amorim himself, meanwhile, said: 'In these kind of games we need to be perfect, and we weren't perfect. If you look at the goals, we can avoid them. We suffer goals that we can avoid. We can do better, that is clear - like the first goal, we can be more aggressive.

'The frustration is there. We need to take our chances. We need to work on a lot of things. The biggest difference is where we had transitions, we couldn't score.'

The likes of Nemanja Vidic (left), Wayne Rooney (second left), Michael Carrick (centre left) and Ferdinand (centre right) were all part of a successful era at United

Ferdinand was positive at half time when his ex-team were only one goal down in the game

After they went 3-0 down, he instead shared: 'Wow - what am I seeing'

Ferdinand was part of a United side that won six Premier Leagues and one Champions League. Scholes, meanwhile, won 11 Premier League titles and was part of the Treble-winning side in 1999.

Rooney was the last of the players to leave United, departing in 2017. They have not won the Premier League since 2013.

United continue to search for the answer, but Ruben Amorim maintained after the game that he would not change his ways.

He said: 'I'm not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.

'We will talk about that every game we lose. I play my way and I am going to play my way until I want to change.'

United, who are 14th in the league table, will host Chelsea at Old Trafford next week, with no European action penned in after missing out on qualification for all of the three competitions last season.
