Oscar Piastri has picked up his seventh win of the 2025 season at the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon as his team-mate Lando Norris failed to finish the race after an engine failure.
There were huge cheers at Circuit Zandvoort for young driver Isack Hadjar who claimed the first podium finish of his fledgling Formula One career, finishing third behind Max Verstappen.
In what was a topsy-turvy race, which also saw both Ferrari drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc both crash out, Piastri once again showed his composure to weather the advances of Verstappen to increase his lead at the top of the Formula One Drivers' Standings.
It was an agonising day for his team-mate, Norris, who suffered an oil leak and an engine failure with a mere seven laps left to go.
‘F***, I’m out, I’m out... unlucky boys,’ the Brit said as his car ground to a halt on the race track, before later cutting a disgruntled figure sitting on a grassy verge just off the edge of the race track.
His early finish handed Piastri a major swing in the race to win this year’s Drivers’ Championship, with Piastri now taking a 34-point lead ahead of Norris.
‘It was incredibly unfortunate for Lando at the end,’ Piastri told Sky Sports after the race.
‘I feel like I was in control of that one and used the pace when I needed to.’
Piastri missed out on a podium finish at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, despite starting the race in third on the grid.
‘It was a different race compared to 12 months ago,’ he said.
‘Very happy with all the work we’ve done to try and improve around here and very satisfied to come out on top.
‘The start of this weekend was looking like a difficult one and I managed to get it together in qualifying and I was happy with the pace I had today,’ he added.
‘A couple of safety cars to spice it up a little bit but we weathered it all.’
While Piastri commands a formidable lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, the Australian admitted he wasn’t looking too far into the future.
‘Starting out on top is a good way to go. If we can keep it running then that will be great. There’s a long way to go so [we’ll] keep doing it one race at a time.
