England vs Netherlands - U21 Euros semi-final: Live score, team news and updates as Lee Carsley's men look to book their place in final

Follow Mail Sport's live blog for the latest score, team news and updates from the U21 Euros semi-final between England and the Netherlands at the Stadion Tehelne Pole.

England 0-0 Netherlands

Hutchinson is looking very dangerous! He's winning that battle on the left flank at the minute. His latest dart helped earn England a corner kick, which eventually resulted in a fierce shot from Elliot that was blocked by the Netherlands' defence.

England 0-0 Netherlands

The Netherlands are now getting their time with the ball and making England - and Stansfield - work hard to try and win it back. You just hope that Carsley's men don't put too much into these passages of play - it could come back to haunt them.

'A David de Gea-esque stop'

Early signs here are that the ref isn't going to let a lot go in terms of robust challenges. Netherlands pretty content for England to have the ball... but how much longer that lasts is a mystery after that last move.
Hutchinson has been so dynamic all tournament as a left No 10 and his cutback just then finds Harvey Elliott and it's a super stop, David de Gea esque, from the Dutch goalkeeper to deny him with his feet. The Netherlands are playing with fire if they keep sitting off

SAVE! England 0-0 Netherlands

I spoke too soon! Netherlands' Roefs produces a top save with his feet to deny Elliot at the far post. Hutchinson was involved on the left and got in a great cross that evaded everyone, only for Elliot to fire into the corner.

It's a great save to keep England at bay.

England 0-0 Netherlands

It's been the gentle start that we were expecting, given the temperature out there. I don't think it's any coincidence that most of the play has been on the right side of the pitch - the shaded side.

You've got to feel for the supporters on the far end.

KICK-OFF: England 0-0 Netherlands

Let's go! England get the semi-final underway in the sweltering Slovakian heat. Seems like a few more have filtered into the stadium before kick-off to enjoy this one.

I think it's going to be good.

England 0-0 Netherlands

Our teams are out onto the pitch and we're just minutes away from kick-off in Bratislava. Only two members of the current squad were involved two years ago so can this new squad tackle the mammoth hurdle of a semi-final?

Interestingly, the senior squad also played the Netherlands in the semi-final of Euro 2024. That was a dramatic occasion, with Ollie Watkins scoring at the death. Let's hope the Young Lions take inspiration from that win.

Reiziger: 'It's going to be an interesting game'

Michael Reiziger, Netherlands U21 boss, pre-match:

We've watched all their games this tournament. These are two strong teams that love to play football. It's going to be an interesting game tomorrow.

'Lots of empty seats at Tehelne Pole'

Still 15 minutes to kick-off but there are so many empty seats which, given organisers claimed north of 20,000 tickets had been sold, seems odd.

Why Hutchinson is Premier League's new most wanted man

Ipswich's Omari Hutchinson has definitely caught the eye with his performances in this tournament, especially against Spain. The winger looks to have a big summer ahead amid interest from clubs in the Premier League and around Europe.

For more on why he's so sought after, check out TOM COLLOMOSSE's excellent deep dive on the 21-year-old.

TOM COLLOMOSSE: With 11 major trophies to his name and a reputation as one of Europe's best coaches, Unai Emery's observations on the game are always worth remembering.

Warm-ups underway in the Slovakian heat

The heat could play a massive factor today. The teams are out on the pitch going through their warm-ups ahead of the 5pm start.

This is definitely a day to keep the ball and make your opponents do the running.

Carsley: 'England are ready for penalties'

Lee Carsley, England U21 boss, pre-match:

'There's definitely more of an awareness of penalties. And the technique and structure that goes behind a penalty shootout, we've definitely done a lot of research.
'We are at the point now where the talking about it and practising it is totally different then to stepping up and taking one.
'We are fortunate now that we have a lot of England players that take penalties for their clubs which really helps.'

'Opportunity knocks for Stansfield'

It’s really important that Jay Stansfield continued to lead the attack tonight. He was magnificent against Spain for the relentless press he put on them.
It’s far trickier to repeat that in this heat but he only has one gear and that’s all out attack. He had to wait patiently for his chance but took it… now he’s got a chance to fire them to a final. Opportunity knocks

More on that 2007 classic

I echo Nathan's hope that tonight's game does not end in heartbreak like it did back in 2007. But I would be happy to see the same level of drama.

That match is only remembered for the mammoth penalty shootout that saw 32 attempts on goal and was eventually decided by Zuiverloon's strike.

Stuart Pearce's side contained some bonafide Barclaysmen - are we still using that term?

Ashley Young, James Milner, Mark Noble, Anton Ferdinand, Scott Carson... I could go on. The Netherlands also had their fair share of memorable names; Ryan Babel and Royston Drenthe chief among them.

'There's lots of optimism in the camp'

Just found a slither of shade here in 33 degree temperature to chat to some of the player families. Lots of optimism in the camp that’s for sure, even if the heat is a worry for Lee Carsley and his staff.
When these two sides met in the 2007 U21 final it ended in the Dutch edging a 13-12 penalty shootout… so hopefully no repeat of that tonight.

All eyes on you

The prospect of winning a major prize is motivation enough, but a lot of these players will be acutely aware of the attention they're getting out in Slovakia. A great performance has the chance to put you at the front of mind for recruitment departments across Europe - the proverbial shop window.

Jarell Quansah, for example, has already sealed a move to Bayer Leverkusen, while Harvey Elliot and Tyler Morton could join him out of Anfield.

Omari Hutchinson is attracting interest from across the top flight, while Jorrel Hato is being eyed by Arsenal and Liverpool on the Netherlands side.

It's a big day for so many of these youngsters.

Netherlands team news: TWO changes

Netherlands boss Michael Reiziger has been forced into one change with the suspension for Van Bommel, who was sent off against Portugal. The match winner that day, Poku, gets a start, while Kasanwirjo comes in for Rensch.

England team news: Anderson STARTS

Plenty of familiar faces for the Premier League watchers among you. Lee Carsley has a very strong squad to choose from despite the absentees. The England boss has made one change to the side that beat Spain in the last round, bringing in Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson for Liverpool's Tyler Morton.

Can the Young Lions do it again?

With all this winning, I'm starting to see why Lee Carsley wasn't too keen to step up to the senior squad. The Under 21 boss is 90 minutes away from making his second European Championship final.

But this passage this time around has been less serene and he's been without a few players currently playing in the Club World Cup. But we shouldn't go too far - this England roster is still filled with players with plenty of Premier League experience.

Today's opponents are the Netherlands, who put up a heroic effort to make it to the semis. They'll be no pushovers but England are certainly the favourites to progress to another final.

It's set to be a crazy hot evening in Slovakia and let's hope the action matches the temperature. The action gets underway at 5pm and before that we'll be bringing you all the team news, updates from on the ground and then the drama when it kicks off.

Let's get to it.
