Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass was placed on injured reserve by the team on Friday, meaning he will miss at least the team's first four games of the season due to a groin ailment.
The timing comes two days before the Bills, who have Super Bowl aspirations, face the Baltimore Ravens to open the NFL season.
The Bills signed veteran kicker Matt Prater on Thursday, leading to his elevation to replace one of the elite special-teams players in the NFL for the foreseeable future.
Bass has been Buffalo's starting kicker since the 2020 season, when he beat out NFL veteran Stephen Hauschka for the role.
Last season, Bass was 24 for 29 on field goals and made 59 of 64 extra-point attempts.
Bass also set the Buffalo Bills record for the longest field goal in franchise history, with a 61-yard bomb last November against the Miami Dolphins.

Prater, 41, has had a full-time kicking job in the NFL since 2008, starting with the Denver Broncos, then the Detroit Lions, and finally the Arizona Cardinals, for the last four seasons.
Prater was not retained by Arizona after suffering a torn meniscus last October, missing the rest of the 2024 season.
More to come.
