Patrick Mahomes' dad files desperate legal attempt to get approval to watch his son's Chiefs games

The embattled father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes Jr. is seeking legal approval to attend his son's NFL games this season, according to a motion filed this week. 

Court records show that Patrick Sr., a 56-year-old former MLB pitcher, filed a motion in the 7th District Court in Tyler, Texas, on Friday requesting permission to travel out of state to see seven of his son's games, according to KLTV.

The motion seeks approval for the former baseball star to travel to Kansas City, Missouri; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested for drunk driving in February of 2024. He would ultimately reach a plea deal, in which he admitted to his third DWI charge and agreed to five years of probation, including a year of intense supervision.

Since then, he violated his parole by drinking alcohol, which resulted in a two-year probation extension and a 16-week treatment program as well as 30 days in jail with credit for time served. 

As a result of the deal, Mahomes Sr., who resides in Texas, has not been permitted to travel out of state. 

Friday's motion states that Mahomes Sr. is aware that he is required to submit urinalysis testing as requested by his supervision officer before and after travel, on each occasion.

It also notes that he has completed 160 hours of community service and completed a 16-week outpatient treatment program at a substance abuse disorder treatment and behavioral health services non-profit. 

A Smith County community supervision officer verified that he has complied with his probation conditions. Mahomes Sr. is also monitored by an ankle device. 

In July, Mahomes Sr. petitioned the court to replace his ankle monitor after it caused irritation.  

His attorney pushed for the courts to allow his client to remove the ankle monitor altogether because it’s left the retired pitcher with a swollen, discolored lower leg. Mahomes Sr. even tried to use a cream on the skin, which did not work, according to his attorney.

His attorney also made the request to his client’s parole officer, who requested that the elder Mahomes submit to a voluntary hair-follicle test and a blood test, which he passed.

The probation officer also noted that he has personally witnessed Pat’s swollen ankle. At one point, Pat had the monitor moved to his other ankle, but the problem persisted.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested for DWI again on the eve of his son's fourth Super Bowl appearance back in 2024.

He was previously arrested for the same offense in 2008 and 2019, and was also banned from driving in 2024 after being found on the roads without a valid license.

After spending 10 days in jail, Mahomes Sr. cut a plea deal with 'intense' supervision for the first 12 months.

Footage from the arrest in Tyler, Texas, later emerged and showed Mahomes Sr ranting to cops that his arrest would cost his son the Super Bowl.

The younger Mahomes spoke about his dad's third DWI arrest in ESPN docuseries 'The Kingdom', saying: 'It was during that Super Bowl week. It became a story and so I had to answer questions about it.

'I think just knowing that it hurt me, woke him up to know that like you can't keep doing the same things.'

The ex-baseball player did make it to the Super Bowl the weekend after the incident to see his son win his third ring, as the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime.

A divorced father of four, Mahomes Sr. posted a 5.34 ERA over 11 MLB seasons, during which time he was primarily used as a reliever.

Mahomes II inherited his father's passion for baseball. Not only was he a high school star in Texas, but he is also a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals.

Furthermore, Mahomes Sr.'s former Minnesota Twins teammate, retired reliever LaTroy Hawkins, is Mahomes II's godfather.
