Hampshire face social media backlash from their own fans after naming controversial former New Zealand cricketer Scott Kuggeleijn in squad... without even announcing his signing

Relegation threatened Hampshire faced a social media backlash on Tuesday night after naming the controversial Scott Kuggeleijn in their squad to face Warwickshire.

Kuggeleijn, 34, was amongst the 15 names posted on X for the County Championship fixture despite Hampshire not announcing the New Zealander as an overseas signing - as is usual practice.

One supporter branded it ‘a disgrace’ while another called it ‘shameful’ and ‘a new low for the club’ given the player’s past.

Kuggeleijn was charged in 2015 with sexual violation by rape and indecent assault involving two separate complainants.

Despite his acquittal following a second trial, after the first resulted in a hung jury, Kuggeleijn's selection for New Zealand's national team and domestic sides have repeatedly sparked public protest.

In 2019 during a game at Eden Park, spectators held up posters complaining about his inclusion. 

He has spent 12 years playing for Northern Districts in New Zealand and joins Hampshire for the final four matches of the County Championship season. 

The side are bottom of Division One, 16 points behind Leicestershire, who they still have to play.
