Wales captain Jac Morgan is set to miss the entirety of his team’s Six Nations campaign after it was confirmed he will be out for at least four months following shoulder surgery.

Morgan – who was his country’s only Test Lion in Australia last summer – dislocated his shoulder against Argentina on November 9. The fitness blow ruled him out of the rest his team’s autumn campaign. Now, the 25-year-old has had surgery with his Ospreys club coach Mark Jones revealing he won’t be back on the field until March at the earliest.

It represents a hammer blow to Wales head coach Steve Tandy as Morgan is one of his only world-class operators. Wales’ final November Test is a daunting clash with double world champions South Africa on Saturday.

Their Six Nations opener is England on February 7.

‘He’s had his operation and it’s all gone really well,’ Jones said of Morgan.

‘He’s on his road to recovery. In terms of time frame, it’ll be four to five months.

‘Those things can change, but we’re working off that basis.’

Morgan and Gloucester scrum-half Tomos Williams were Wales’ only two Lions earlier this summer, reflective of the national side’s struggles. Morgan’s Ospreys contract expires at the end of the season.

He is of strong interest to English giants Saracens as well as Gloucester.

The flanker visited Saracens before the autumn Tests and had meetings with the club’s coaching hierarchy.

With the Welsh Rugby Union proposing cutting one of Wales’ four existing sides, the long-term future of the Ospreys remains unclear.

That in turn has forced Morgan to look at other options.

The WRU has said it will honour all existing player contracts and it is understood the Ospreys have been able to offer Morgan a new deal. But at this stage, it is far from certain the Wales captain will stay in his homeland moving forward.
