SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY will enter administration on Friday in a move that will be a hammer blow to their chances of avoiding relegation to League One.
Daily Mail Sport understands staff at the Championship crisis club were left in tears after being informed of the development in a meeting at the training ground on Friday morning.
Sources have told us that Begbies Traynor has been appointed the administrators for a process that would likely see Wednesday docked 12 points. They currently sit rock bottom of the table with six points from 11 games.
Daily Mail Sport exclusively revealed last week that the club was facing a winding-up order over an unpaid tax bill, which is close to £1m and thought to relate to PAYE and VAT.
Wednesday, who have paid wages late in five of the past seven months, are currently under five embargoes with the EFL.
It is unclear whether this latest dramatic twist will force their unpopular owner, Dejphon Chansiri, into a sale, with the Thai businessman having already exasperated potential buyers over his demands.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has come under pressure to sell the troubled club
Fans showed their displeasure at the owner with this message at Hillsborough this week
This month fans got the game against Coventry temporarily halted by running on the pitch
Fans of the club amplified their protests against Chansiri by staging a mass boycott at Hillsborough for the Championship game against Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening.
Prior to the match, the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust projected a message onto the side of the stadium urging the owner to sell up.
A Trust statement on Thursday read: ‘The empty seats inside Hillsborough were not a sign of absence, but of unity. This was a visual representation of what Sheffield Wednesday will look like if Dejphon Chansiri continues to refuse to relinquish control.
'He will be left alone – with a hollow shell of a football club, a far cry from his once-stated ambition of leading Wednesday into the Premier League by the 150th anniversary of our great club.
‘The strength and togetherness shown by our fanbase demonstrates a deep and unwavering commitment to the cause. It shows that our supporters are unified, organised and determined to bring about lasting change.’
