Nottingham Forest are looking to improve their squad in defence and midfield in January despite spending more than £200million on transfers last summer.

Forest climbed out of the relegation zone with a stunning 3-0 win at Liverpool last Saturday - their most significant result to date under manager Sean Dyche.

Dyche is Forest’s third boss of the season following the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo and Ange Postecoglou, and he is starting to make his presence felt after consecutive wins over Leeds and Liverpool.

But Daily Mail Sport understands that Forest are again likely to be active in January as Dyche looks to bolster the spine of his team, with Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood among a number of possible targets.

The Brighton midfielder has made only four appearances in the Premier League this season, though his most recent was decisive.

Hinshelwood scored a late winner in the 2-1 victory over Brentford last Saturday, shortly after coming on as a substitute.

The 20-year-old can also play at right-back and as a holding midfielder, while it is believed Forest are also in the market for a centre-back to provide senior cover for Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo.

Murillo is a target for numerous elite clubs but is unlikely to leave Forest before the end of the season. After the victory at Anfield, the Brazilian defender said: ‘The winning spirit we had last season is coming back. I am so happy, feeling very good and it's not just me, I think it is everyone.

‘Because of the work we have done in the week, maybe it has changed our minds and it has given us confidence to play well, given confidence to the fans and staff and everyone.’
