The Minnesota Vikings have placed backup quarterback Carson Wentz on injured reserve after the signal caller underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.

Wentz, age 32, had been deputizing for the injured JJ McCarthy on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.

However, the southpaw quarterback suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder which will end his tenth NFL season.

Wentz attempted to finish out the game. But third-string quarterback Max Brosmer - an undrafted free agent who played for the University of New Hampshire for five years before transferring to the University of Minnesota in college - took over for the remainder of the game.

The Vikings do not have a quarterback signed to their practice squad. They had former third-round pick Desmond Ridder on their active roster earlier this month.

This Sunday's matchup against the division rival Detroit Lions will likely see one of those two quarterbacks get the start unless McCarthy is healthy enough to play.

McCarthy is essentially playing in his rookie season. The 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft suffered a season-ending injury last year in the preseason - forcing him to miss the whole campaign without playing a single snap.

This year, the former Michigan product suffered a high ankle sprain following a Week 2 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Reports indicate that McCarthy will be healthy enough to return for the game against Detroit, but the team has not yet declared his status.
