Tuchel in town

Interesting...

I have just been made aware that a certain Thomas Tuchel is at Old Trafford tonight.

My colleague Nathan Salt then wrote to me: 'He must know about Lacey Ball'.

That would be some feat if Shea Lacey managed to work his way into World Cup contention based on a substitute performance.

Obviously, I know it's a joke from Nathan, don't worry... but just imagine.

The making of Shea Lacey

With Shea Lacey on the bench this evening, here’s my inside read on how he forced his way into Ruben Amorim’s plans.Heads up, DailyMail+ is now free for the first month, then 99p a month for the next FIVE months. Thanking you.

If ever there was someone who could relate to being a Scouser and still carving out a (positive) name for yourself at Manchester United, it's Wayne Rooney.

Theatre of Nightmares for Toffees

Everton absolutely hate playing Manchester United... I mean, HATE it.

They never seem to get a good result. Well, at least it's a real rarity that they do at least.

Manchester United have won 42 Premier League games against the Toffees, the most wins any side has against another in the competition.

Everton have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games against Man Utd (D5 L6), a 1-0 home win in April 2022. They’ve won just one of their last 32 against them at Old Trafford (D8 L23), 1-0 in December 2013.

Yep, not good reading for them.

If I were a Toffees fan, I wouldn't be too excited about kick-off happening when it comes.

Amorim: 'We will miss Sesko and Cunha'

Ruben Amorim, Man United manager, speaking to Sky Sports about striker injuries:

You need to be prepared for anything. You cannot find a team in the Premier League without injuries. We miss these players, Ben [Sesko] and Matheus [Cunha] changed a lot of things for us.We have to give credit to all the Premier League teams. It's a special league and it's becoming so hard to win back-to-back games and have a lot of winning runs. It's more about the league than the other teams dropping the level. That can happen with any team. We're at the beginning of the season, we changed a bit since Liverpool. Sometimes that detail can do a lot for a team. Let's not get carried away. Today's going to be tough and need to win.

Atmosphere building

Right, I have a question for you all.

How many of the readers of this blog have bought a half-and-half scarf in the past? This fella below has.

Personally, I'm not a fan. However, when I watched Sporting Lisbon last month, I bought one of their scarves, so I can't judge.

Anyway, he is there to support his team, like everybody else, and thousands are now descending on the Theatre of Dreams.

We are less than an hour from kick-off.

'Reaction to United's form over the top'

Chris Sutton, former Premier League striker, on BBC Sport:

You would be forgiven for thinking Manchester United have morphed into Real Madrid from the reaction to their recent results. But, although all the excitement around them has been a bit over the top, they have definitely improved - and especially at home.David Moyes will make things difficult for United on his return to Old Trafford and his side will be resilient as usual, but I don't think they will hold out.If Everton had a goalscoring number nine then the outcome would be more in doubt, but I do not see them causing United problems at the other end of the pitch, either.I am keeping Beto in my fantasy team, because you can guarantee that if I took him out he would start this game and score, but - with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha - United carry far more of a threat.

NO Cunha

Well, there is no Matheus Cunha.

The Manchester United forward had to pull out of turning on the Christmas lights in Altrincham the other day, but it was unclear as to why.

A statement said it was due to an 'accident in training', but that is all we were told.

Clearly, he must be injured as tonight he is absent from the squad. Hopefully, United will tell us more information on what the 'medical reasons' are.

Nonetheless, it's a big blow.

Big night for Zirkzee

Joshua Zirkzee finally has his chance.

The striker has barely had a sniff all season due to the signing of Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha. He has surely been tearing his hair out (and there is a lot of it).

But tonight, Ruben Amorim has gifted him the keys to the engine of the frontline, and he simply can't crash.

Look, we all know it's never easy coming in to start when you barely have any game time. Zirkzee is going to be incredibly rusty and will spend the first few minutes trying to get oil in those bolts.

This is football at the top level, though, and he simply has to perform now that he has been handed an opportunity.

The Dutchman did score a brace against Everton here last year, which should give him confidence.

Can he do the same today?

Everton Team News - Coleman STARTS

Well, this is a surprise.

Seamus Coleman is starting at right-back this evening for Everton, which is a real rarity these days.

The Toffees skipper is the only change to the team that beat Fulham before the international break.

Man United Team News - Zirkzee STARTS

Here is the confirmation.

Joshua Zirkzee will indeed start up top for Manchester United this evening in the absence of Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.

Leny Yoro also comes into the side while Lisandro Martinez returns to the bench.

Breaking:Zirkzee set to START

Joshua Zirkzee is set to be handed his first start of the season in a shock move by Ruben Amorim in tonight’s Monday night clash against Everton.Only academy centre back Tyler Fredricson has had fewer minutes in the first team this season than Zirkzee, who has a total of 90 in all competitions. But Daily Mail Sport understands that the Dutchman is set to start against Everton in a huge opportunity for him to stake his claim for more regular minutes.United are already without £73.7million striker Benjamin Sesko, who is set to be sidelined for around a month with a knee problem sustained before the international break at Tottenham Hotspur.

Only academy centre back Tyler Fredricson has had fewer minutes in the first team this season than the star, who has a total of 90 in all competitions.

Amorim: 'We are a more dominant team now'

Ruben Amorim, Man United manager, speaking on Friday:

The first thinking was the environment was really different in the Premier League and I was excited in that. Right away, I knew we would struggle in some things, but the feeling was it is the best league in the world, maybe the best club.[The] important thing is that it doesn’t matter what we did in the recent games. We cannot forget we suffer a lot in those games and play every game like it is the last one. [We are] more dominant, playing better football and more competitive in every way.
