Liverpool’s £125m problem

Alexander Isak arrived with huge expectations but it has not clicked so far. Just one goal, in the Carabao Cup, and his first four league starts all ended in defeat.

He managed only 15 touches against Forest before being hauled off. Fitness, form and confidence are all big question marks around British football’s most expensive player.

'I'm expecting Curtis Jones at right back'

Some big changes for Liverpool tonight with Alisson ruled out. The Brazil No 1 is ill, it is understood. And given the amount of bugs and flus going round at the moment, it is no surprise. The fact it is him of anyone, though, is a bitter blow for Liverpool given the fact he has just spent nearly two months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, I'm expecting Curtis Jones at right back which will be interesting.

PSV arrive on Merseyside

The visitors are out on the pitch at Anfield, taking a first look at the scene ahead of a huge Champions League night.

There are no former Liverpool faces in the PSV squad, but there is plenty of familiarity for Slot against the Dutch champions and their manager Peter Bosz.

PSV come in full of confidence after strong domestic form and last season’s win over the Reds in Eindhoven, and they will not be overawed by the occasion. All eyes now on the warm-ups and the final preparations before kick off.

Bosz: ‘Slot will turn it around’

Peter Bosz, PSV, pre-match presser:

He has so much quality, he will turn it around. Where they have a problem is all the good purchases they brought in, how do you make a team which gels together? We’re here to play a good match, it should be about us, not the opponent. We have to be PSV and play our own way. Liverpool have their own way of playing, tomorrow it is about who does it the best.

Expect a high-scoring affair

Peter Bosz’s side are exciting and chaotic in equal measure. PSV have scored and conceded in each of their last 10 Champions League matches and have nine goals for and seven against in just four games this season.

They have also scored more goals after the 86th minute than any other team in the competition.

Slot: ‘The situation is unexpected for me and the club’

Arne Slot, Liverpool, pre-match presser:

It is ridiculous, almost. This is something I didn’t expect to be in, not at any club I worked at, let alone if you are manager of Liverpool. It is unexpected for the club, for me, for everyone, but the harder it gets at this club, the more we are together. Every day you have to prove yourself if you are working at a club this level.

Reds arrive for duty

The Liverpool squad have arrived at Anfield ahead of a huge Champions League night. This is a game they dare not lose, not with their domestic form unravelling and pressure building on Slot.

Faces look focused, business-like and straight into match mode. This one feels big, not just for points, but for momentum.

Biscan: 'I would not write off Liverpool at all'

Igor Biscan, ex-Liverpool midfielder, via Boyle Sports:

t just shows you how difficult football is sometimes. Two and two put together sometimes do not give you four. It's so many details that can decide each game, never mind the whole campaign. It's just such a tough league, and the momentum and the atmosphere are also very, very important. And then when you see the likes of Arsenal, who didn't have the greatest start, but once they picked up the momentum and the confidence and everything, now they look like a team that's just destined to win the league. So it can shift again in the next month or two, or at least before the end of the season. I would not write off Liverpool at all.

Breaking:PSV team news

The visitors’ team news is in and Bosz goes with a strong, experienced XI at Anfield tonight. Kovar starts in goal, with Schouten captaining from midfield and Perisic adding experience on the left.

Til and Saibari both start after their strong recent form, while Man leads the line as PSV look to frustrate and counter. Dest and Salah-Eddine provide width from full-back.

No messing around from the Dutch side. They are here to compete.

Breaking:Liverpool team news: TWO changes for Reds

Team news is in and Slot has made a few big calls for PSV at Anfield tonight. Alisson misses out , with Mamardashvili returning in goal. Ekitike starts after Isak’s struggles at the weekend, while Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai line up in midfield.

Van Dijk captains the Reds once more, with Konate given another chance to settle. On the bench, Gomez is available despite his knee issue, while Isak drops down among the substitutes as Liverpool look for a lift.

Alisson OUT again

Liverpool are without Alisson tonight, just four days after his long awaited return. Giorgi Mamardashvili deputises again, with the absence believed to be due to illness rather than injury.

Europe remains Reds’ safe haven

For all their domestic chaos, Liverpool have been a very different animal in the Champions League.

Slot’s side have won three of their four games in this league phase and remain perfect at Anfield in Europe, with 13 consecutive home wins. If there is any competition where they still look like champions, it is this one.
