Lewis Hamilton admitted his £60million-a-year Ferrari experience is a ‘nightmare’ following his retirement from the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after ramming into the back of Alpine’s Franco Colapinto.
The seven-time world champion pulled into the garage after 40 of the 71 laps. He only started 13th compared to team-mate Charles Lerclerc’s third-place slot on the grid.
Hamilton’s horror afternoon saw him collide with Williams’ Carlos Sainz on the first lap – no blame attached to either – and then drove into Colapinto, earning him a five-second penalty and a point on his licence, with stewards holding him fully responsible for the crash.
‘This is a nightmare,’ said Hamilton. ‘I’ve been living with it for a while. The flit between the dream of driving for this amazing team and the nightmare of the results we’ve had is a challenge.
‘It has been disastrous and disappointing for everyone in the team. I am trying to keep my head above water and remain positive.
‘Charles did a great job in qualifying, so there is some performance in that car, and I have to believe there is something to come out of all these hardships. I am sure we are destined for something positive in the future.

‘Maybe we are getting all our bad luck out of the way this year. Who knows? We won’t give up and we will come back fighting at the next race.’
Hamilton has scored 66 points fewer than Leclerc, and it would be a more stark disparity other than for Leclerc being cruelly bumped out of the race while running third in a collision involving McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.
