Jose Mourinho RAGES at 'poor' Madrid derby referee, insisting he 'couldn't handle the pressure' - as he prints out photos of missed red cards in latest rant

A furious Jose Mourinho lashed out at referee Ortiz Arias, claiming he was not qualified to officiate Sunday's Madrid derby.

Mourinho ended up on the losing side as his 10-man Real Madrid lost 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano against fierce city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Still seething in the press conference, Mourinho arrived with printed out photos which showed, in his opinion, a series of major calls missed by the referee. 

'We could save ourselves the press conference,' an irritated Mourinho began. 

'Here they are [shows photos of the possible red cards], two clear reds. It would have been 50 minutes of 11 against nine. All I can do is hug my players, who gave everything, who produced a first half full of class and personality. I prepared the match so we could win it in the second half.'

Rather than pick apart the performance of his players, which saw Dean Huijsen sent off, he focused in on the 'poor' performance of Arias, a referee he does not believe is suitable for the biggest games. 

'The one who should be happy is the Refereeing Appointments Committee because the whole thing was very strange,' Mourinho's rant continued. 

'A week in advance, they already knew who the referee would be, when it used to be 24 hours before. A 41-year-old referee, who has never been an international, that won't be top level. 

'The poor guy came here and couldn't handle the pressure. 

'The pressure here is like something out of the 1980s. Trujillo, the VAR official, called him over for the first red and didn't call him over for the second, which was even clearer. This Trujillo has a history with Real Madrid: last year in the Copa final, Osasuna, Girona...

'If the poor referee has no experience, no stature for a derby, then this man is either under no pressure, or under a kind of pressure we know nothing about. 

'I would have liked to leave here with the win or without having to speak. I arrived here three months ago and you know I'm not usually one to go in this direction. 

'Two reds against Elche and we won. Two reds today, that's already more difficult. It's a referee with only small matches behind him and a VAR official who has a history. 

'Congratulations to the Refereeing Appointments Committee.'

Mourinho is an expert at making his point in press conferences and this was one of his finest since returning to Spain.

Goals from Grimaldo, who scored from the penalty spot, and Jonathan David ensured Diego Simeone's side won it 2-1. Antonio Rudiger's late goal was merely a consolation.

But it was the fact that Atletico Madrid kept all 11 players on the pitch en route to victory that most irked Mourinho and Madrid. 

Mourinho's print-outs included one tackle by Cristian Romero on Bellingham, which looked particularly bad upon second viewing but only drew a yellow card.

Kang-In Lee's tackle on Fede Valverde went without punishment, while Huijsen got a straight red card for holding Giuliano Simeone inside the box. 

In an official club statement, Real Madrid said: 'Real Madrid lose the derby at the Metropolitano in a match marked by Ortiz Arias' VERY TERRIBLE REFEREEING. 

'He failed to send off Cuti Romero in the first half for stepping on Bellingham's knee (despite going to the monitor to review the incident), nor did he send off Kang-In Lee for stepping on Valverde's left ankle. 

'Both decisions had an impact on the match, which was ultimately decided in Atlético's favor in the second half.' 

Frustration in Real Madrid's ranks also extended to star man Jude Bellingham who was seen giving the referee a piece of his mind following the final whistle. 

Footage showed the Englishman shouting 'oh my god' at Arias, before adding 'two red cards!' 

Bellingham was particularly aggrieved that Romero's challenge on him did not see red when replays suggested that it was a sending off offence.
