The wife of Freddie Freeman has sent her support to Alex and Kayla Vesia after the Dodgers pitcher stepped away from the team due to a 'deeply personal family matter.'

On the eve of the World Series against the Blue Jays - which kicks off on Friday evening in Toronto - the Dodgers announced that Vesia and his wife were 'navigating' the private issue.

Precise details of the 'family matter' have not been made public but the Dodgers' announcement prompted an outpouring of well-wishes.

Among those to speak out was Chelsea Freeman, wife of Vesia's teammate Freddie Freeman. 'Please keep the Vesias in your prayers,' she wrote on social media.

Neither Vesia nor his wife has posted on social media since the Dodgers confirmed he was stepping away from the team. Back in April, the couple revealed they were expecting their first child.

'It is with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter,' the Dodgers said in Thursday's statement.

Last year, the Freemans' son Max, then three, was hospitalized with Guillain-Barre syndrome

'The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.'

Last year, the baseball world united in support of the Freemans as they battled their own personal matter.

The couple's young son Max, then just three, was hospitalized with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) - a rare autoimmune disease. The toddler was rushed in for treatment with what described as 'full body paralysis'.

Max began to lose sensation in his feet before that numbness spread to his shoulders and ultimately affected his breathing. He was rushed to an Orange County hospital, where he was placed on a ventilator.

Freeman took time away from baseball to be with his family before returning in August. He was greeted with a standing ovation on his emotional comeback to Dodger Stadium.

Then, in March of this year, at the start of this season, Chelsea revealed that Max appeared to be on the road to recovery.

In a post to her Instagram story, Chelsea said that her son was '80 percent recovered after today's assessment'. She also revealed that her son 'had reflexes in both his knees and feet for the first time.'
