A former Premier League striker has been dismissed just nine games into the National League season after a poor start left Sutton United near the foot of the table.
Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to promoted Tamworth proved decisive and the club moved quickly to make a change.
Sutton, relegated from League Two last term, had hoped for a stronger start under their manager but have slumped to one win in nine league outings.
A midweek National League Cup defeat to Brighton Under-21s added to the pressure ahead of the weekend setback.
The club confirmed on Wednesday that head coach Steve Morison had left his post by mutual consent, saying: 'The Club wishes to place on record its thanks to Steve for his service during his 21-month spell at Gander Green Lane.
'His energy, passion and dedication have been infectious to all, and his tireless work off the pitch in helping reshape the club as a more professional organisation has been invaluable.

'We wish him all the best for the future. First Team Coach, Jon Meeney, will assume the position of Interim Head Coach, with a newly-appointed Head Coach to be confirmed in due course.'
Morison, 42, arrived from Hornchurch in January 2024 to replace Matt Gray and initially stabilised the U's, taking their relegation fight to the final day with an eight-game unbeaten run before they went down from League Two.
He then led a summer overhaul which produced a 12th-place finish in the National League last season but this campaign started poorly, with just one win from nine league matches.

He later dropped to the Isthmian League with Hornchurch, impressing there to earn the Sutton job.
Sutton travel to Brackley Town this weekend with Meeney at the helm as they try to halt their poor start. Supporters will be looking for an immediate response on the road while the club move quickly to find a permanent replacement.
