The Florida Gators have fired head coach Billy Napier, just hours after he was booed by fans despite a win over Mississippi State.

Napier had been in charge of the team for four seasons, finishing with an overall record of 22-23.

He is due $21million in salary, per The Athletic's Chris Vannini, with $9.7m due within the next 30 days. The rest, the report claims, will be paid annually into 2028.

The decision comes after weeks of uncertainty and shortly after he was booed off the field by Gators fans, despite a 23-21 win in the Swamp on Saturday night.

Florida is 3-4 to start the season and the fans' resentment was a brutal sign that his time in Gainesville was coming to an end.

It was reported earlier on Sunday morning that Florida had called players in for an unscheduled team meeting at 2pm ET.

A Week 2 upset at the hands of South Florida was the first nail in Napier's coffin, and the Gators have also lost to LSU, Miami and Texas A&M so far this season.

Napier had three years remaining - after the conclusion of this season - on his seven-year contract, and heading into 2025 it appeared things were looking up.

Florida is led by five-star sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, who recently threw five interceptions in a brutal two-score loss at LSU.

Prior to Florida, Napier was head coach at Louisiana, where he won two Sun Belt titles.
