England could be without opening bowler Chris Woakes for the remainder of their series-decider against India after he suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder while fielding on Thursday.
The veteran seamer left the Oval pitch with his left arm in a sling after landing awkwardly by the boundary towards the end of a rain-affected first day of the fifth Test.
Woakes' injury is a blow to an already-depleted England's chances of clinching a series victory over India, who closed on 204 for six, and may also impact his hopes of playing in the Ashes, which start in November.
The 36-year-old was hurt after chasing a Karun Nair drive to the long-off boundary, flicking the ball away from the rope to stop the four, but jarring his shoulder as he broke his fall with his left hand.
Woakes – who has played every match in this series and took the wicket of KL Rahul on Thursday - immediately clutched his shoulder in agony and received treatment from physio Ben Davies, who he left the field alongside.
'It doesn't look great,' admitted England's other opening bowler, Gus Atkinson. 'It is a big shame in the last game of the series. I am hoping it is not too bad, but whatever it is, he will get the full support of everyone.'
