Chelsea's players were forced to evacuate Cobham training ground after a fire alarm was triggered at the complex's swimming pool on Friday afternoon.

The Blues, who take on Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, were gearing up for the Premier League clash when the alarm sounded amid fears of a chlorine leak at the Cobham base.

Ahead of Enzo Maresca's 3pm session with the first team, players were forced to evacuate the complex before Surrey Fire and Rescue arrived to investigate.

Emergency services confirmed the incident was a false alarm,

'Fire services responded to an automatically triggered alarm at Chelsea FC's Cobham training facility,' Chelsea revealed in a statement. 'As a precaution, all staff were safely evacuated.

'Emergency services confirmed a false alarm, and staff and players were able to return to the building.'

Enzo Maresca's 3pm training session is believed to have still gone ahead after the false alarm

According to the Sun, Chelsea players were already in their training kit when the alarm sounded — and the 3pm session went ahead as planned.

Cobham's swimming facility is a 56ft hydrotherapy pool, fitted with an underwater treadmill and camera to aid players recovering from long-term injuries.

While its main purpose is to help those on the treatment table at Chelsea, other players use it for standard recovery purposes after long training sessions.

The Blues have been training at the £20million Cobham facility since 2005, before it officially opened two years later.

Due to planning permission restrictions, which stated that no building could be taller than those in the surrounding area, about a third of the facility was built underground.

Maresca's Club World Cup champions have enjoyed a fairly positive start to the season, sitting fifth in the Premier League behind Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Bournemouth,

The Blues will hope to close the five-point gap on the Gunners with a favourable run of fixtures of the next four games, with two promoted sides and Wolves to play during that run.
