Glasner: 'Disrespectful to say Liverpool had a weak team'

Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace manager, in his post-match press conference:

I played for 19 years and was never good enough to play for Liverpool. These are all very good players so it is disrespectful to say that we played a weak team.

 Jessica Hornby / Sportimage

Goals galore

Guys, I needed to take a break after full-time of the Newcastle game there.

I just covered all five games, and boy, they had no chill. The goals were relentless all night.

There were 18 across the board tonight; it felt like I was constantly writing goal posts.

Oh yeah, and don't forget the two red cards.

OK, I may sound like I'm moaning, but I did have a lot of fun. I'd rather be worn out by entertainment than be bored with nothing happening.

Tonight was a brilliant night of footie.

Pressure ramps up on Slot

Wait, wait... don't come at me yet, Liverpool fans.

This is not me saying that Arne Slot should be shown the door, that would be silly.

However, he really needs to look at his tactics, that's for certain.

These defeats are on him, not the players. Liverpool are just way too easy to play through at the moment; teams have figured them out, and Slot hasn't reacted.

Inevitably, a run of defeats like this puts pressure on the manager, and the Dutchman needs to sort this out pronto.

If not, eventually, fans will grow impatient.

Who is in the fifth round?

Right then, who is in the fifth round?

We have the draw coming up tonight, so I'd better tell you who will be in it, hadn't I?

Here are the teams still in the Carabao Cup:

  • Arsenal
  • Crystal Palace
  • Manchester City
  • Chelsea
  • Newcastle United
  • Brentford
  • Fulham
  • Cardiff City

The worst side in Europe?

Whoever thought it would get this bad?

Since the 27th September, Liverpool have lost more games than any other side in Europe's big-five leagues in all competitions.

The Reds have Aston Villa, Real Madrid, and Manchester City in their next three games, too.

I honestly have no idea when this miserable run of defeats will end for Arne Slot's time.

They just get worse, and worse, each week.

FULL-TIME: Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham

The holders are in the hat for round five.

It was a fairly straightforward night for Newcastle, who never looked like losing after Fabian Schar opened the scoring.

Their love affair with this competition continues.

Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham

The Newcastle fans are really enjoying this.

It's ironic cheer after ironic cheer as everything seems to be going wrong for the Spurs.

The holders are cruising through.

HANDBAGS! Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham

Fighttttttttt!

It's all kicking off at St. James. Park, and you'll never guess who is at the centre of it all.

That's right, Joelinton.

He first starts on Mohammad Kudus and then gets into a tussle with Xavi Simons. It's all happening here.

The bloke just loves a scrap.

FULL-TIME: Wolves 3-4 Chelsea

What. A. Match.

Chelsea just about hang on, but my word, what a fightback from Wolves in that second half.

They were down and out at the break, but they made a real fist of it in the second period and nearly sent the game to penalties.

But Chelsea just about scrape by.

FULL-TIME: Swansea 1-3 Man City

Job done for Manchester City.

It all looked like it was going Pete Tong in the first half, but City rallied and turned things around.

Second-half goals from Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki see them into the hat for round five.

FULL-TIME: Liverpool 0-3 Crystal Palace

Yet more misery for Liverpool.

It's a sixth loss in seven matches for Arne Slot's men as the crisis continues to deepen at Anfield.

Crystal Palace swept them aside for the third time this season, and this was by far the most dominant of the lot.

FULL-TIME: Arsenal 2-0 Brighton

Another day, another win for Arsenal.

The names on the roster may change, but the results stay the same - the Gunners just can't stop winning.

Oh, and another cheeky clean sheet.

Goal:Swansea 1-3 Man City (Cherki 90+4')

The goals just keep coming!

Manchester City really are turning on the style now, and Rayan Cherki finishes off Swansea with a lovely finish.

Just too good.

An instant response!

I can't believe what I am watching, David Moller Wolfe gets his second with a scrabby lob.

This game isn't over yet!

Goal:Liverpool 0-3 Crystal Palace (Pino 88')

Game, set, and match!

Crystal Palace polish off a wonderful display with a fine goal, and Yeremy Pino scores it.

He bends one into teh bottom corner with so many bodies around him - he deserves it.

Anfield then breaks out into 'You'll Never Walk Alone' in what has been another miserable night for them.

Goal:Wolves 2-4 Chelsea (Gittens 90')

WHAT A GOAL!

Out of absolutely nowhere Jamie Gittens hammers one in off the post from 25 yards.

I can't believe it, that really is out of nothing, just as wolves were building a head of steam.

That should win it for Chelsea.

Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

Most of the Liverpool fans have left.

My friend, who is a season ticket holder there, usually never leaves early, but he left after the red card.

I have had another fan tell me it's one of the worst Liverpool games they have ever been to.

That just syas it all, really.

RED CARD: Wolves 2-3 Chelsea

Oh, wow, wow, wow!

It's all happening in this fourth round; now Liam Delap has been sent off in his return appearance.

He takes out Emmanuel Agbadou, earns himself a second yellow card, and gives Wolves even more hope.

This is going to be a grandstand finish!

RED CARD: Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

And it gets worse for Liverpool...

Amara Nallo is sent for an early bath for the second time in his young Liverpool career.

And guess what? He was sent off in the other appearance, too.

Justin Devenny is away, Nallo brings him down, and I mean, you just can't do that.

If this game wasn't over before, it is now.

COMEBACK COMPLETE!

Manchester City have turned this game around, and Omar Marmoush is wheeling away in celebration in front of the away fans.

The forward takes the ball on the turn in the box, and then he whallops it in at the near post.

What a finish!

Goal:Arsenal 2-0 Brighton (Saka 77')

That should be that!

The fifth round is now calling for Arsenal as Bukayo Saka looks to have finished Brighton off.

Jason Steele makes a save, but the ball just rolls into Saka's path, and he finishes it off.

Game over.

Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

There's the frustration.

federico Chiesa has lost it, truly lost it, and starts some handbags here at Anfield.

There is a real pile on in the middle, and once it's broken up, Chiesa gets a yellow card.

Let it all out, Federico...

Goal:Wolves 2-3 Chelsea (Wolfe 73')

HERE WE GO!

I told you this one wasn't done yet. Wolves do get their second goal back, and it's game on.

David Moller Wolfe pops up at the back post and drills a brilliant finish into the bottom corner.

Molineux is full of hope again.

GOOD SAVE! Wolves 1-3 Chelsea

Ohhhh, so close!

I'm telling you, Wolves are not out of this one yet; they are still fighting to get back into it.

Jorgen Strand Larsen looks to have pulled another goal back, but Filip Jorgensen pulls off one hell of a save to deny him.

I really thought that was going in.

'Now one of Woltemade's strengths'

Woltemade header! His third such goal from six for Newcastle. He'll be even better when heading is listed as one of his strengths...

Goal:Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham (Woltemade 50')

Big Nick is at it again!

Woltemade simply can't stop scoring at the moment; everything he touches turns to goals.

The German gets on the end of a lovely little dinked cross and beats the goalkeeper with a cheeky header.

I thought he wasn't meant to be good with his head?

SUBSTITUTION: Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

Ahhh, poor Ismaila...

Sarr isn't showing it, but I bet he isn't a happy bunny as he sees his number on the fourth official's board.

There will be no hat-trick for the winger as he is replaced by Justin Devenny.

SECOND HALF: Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

We are back underway at St. James' Park.

Most of the fans are back in their seats, though, they must still be tucking into their pies and pints.

They will be hoping nothing happens in the next few minutes.

Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

I don't think you can blame the players for this Liverpool performance.

This is on Arne Slot; the system is all wrong yet again, like it seems to be every week.

The Reds are just so open, and Crystal Palace are just waltzing their way through at will.

Slot's tactics are all over the place...

Goal:Arsenal 1-0 Brighton (Nwaneri 58')

What a lovely finish!

Arsenal finally break the deadlock, and it's one of their superstar youngsters (not Max Dowman) who unlocks the door for them.

The ball is shifted to young Ethan Nwaneri, and he bends one low into the far corner with style.

Brilliant strike.

HANDBAGS! Wolves 1-3 Chelsea

It's getting tasty now!

Hwang Hee-Chan shows his frustration by snapping at Romeo Lavia, and then all hell breaks loose.

The Chelsea boys are not happy with the Wolves man and charge over to start the pushing and shoving.

I mean, we all know how these go, and after a bit of a kerfuffle, the referee clears the area and Hwang is booked.

Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

Every time Crystal Palace go forward, you just think they are going to score.

Ismaila Sarr is having an absolute field day here, and yet again, he has a pop, this time from distance.

I mean, when you are on a hat-trick, why not?

It's a decent dig, but Freddie Woodman does well to get low and hold onto the ball.

Goal:Wolves 1-3 Chelsea (Arokodare 48')

Ohhhh, hello, hello, hello...

Wolves have the tiniest, teeniest bit of hope thanks to striker Tolu Arokodare.

He is fed through down the left of the penalty area, and he bends one beautifully into the bottom corner.

That's more like it.

Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

This is probably only going to get worse for Liverpool.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has come on for the second half, and man, is he in good form right now.

I have a feeling that this could get messy in the second half, maybe even four or five.

Liverpool's defending has been woeful.

HALF-TIME: Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

The whistle is blown on Tyneside.

Newcastle deserves their lead, but Tottenham has had their moments tonight.

Still all to play for.

SECOND HALF!

Jeez, that was quick.

I barely had time to settle properly into proceedings at St. James' Park before all the other games kicked off again.

This night has been relentless!

OFF THE BAR! Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

Oh no, oh no, oh no...

Harvey Barnes, what have you done? How have you not scored that?

The winger has his head in his hands in a heap on the floor as he has hit the bar from five yards out.

Malick Thiaw (who may well be offside) squares it in the air for Barnes, and he goes for the acrobatic option rather than heading the ball in.

It hits the bar... he should score.

'Hard to see a way back for Liverpool'

Six losses in the last seven games, 10 matches without a clean sheet, seven in a row going 1-0 down. Whatever slant you want to put on it, whatever mitigating factors there are with team selection and injuries, that makes for grim reading.
This one is not done yet, of course, but it is hard to see a way back. At least Arne Slot has his subs bench to turn to... ah, that's full of teenagers.

HALF-TIME: Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

When it rains, it pours.

Arne Slot charges down the tunnel as the rain hammers against his bald head, with his Liverpool side losing yet again.

Crystal Palace are cruising.

HALF-TIME: Arsenal 0-0 Brighton

Not much to say about this one.

The fact of the matter is, that was pretty darn rubbish to watch, and I hope the second half is better.

HALF-TIME: Swansea 1-1 Man City

All level in South Wales.

Manchester City have been pretty pants, in all honesty, but Jeremy Doku is saving them from embarrassment.

Pep won't be a happy bunny, mind.

HALF-TIME: Wolves 0-3 Chelsea

There are the boos.

Wolves are losing yet again, but this is worse than normal. Chelsea are schooling them here at Molineux.

It just keeps getting worse by the game.

Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace

'Sacked in the morning!'

That is the chant from the away end directed at Arne Slot; they are loving life at the moment.

Who would have thought that chant would ever be sung at Slot just a few months ago?

How times have changed.

Goal:Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace (Sarr 45+1')

Guess who?

Yep, Ismaila Sarr is at it again, and boy, this is a lovely goal all around. From the pass to the finish.

Yeremy Pino threads a lovely ball to send Sarr through, and he bends the ball beautifully into the corner.

This could get messy.

'Deserved Newcastle lead'

Newcastle lead is deserved after stronger start. Tonali corner hoisted towards pen spot & Schar climbs highest to head in. Spurs inquest afterwards - it looked to me like Schar just wanted it more than Richarlison, who he outjumped.

Now that is cheeky, hella cheeky. Estevao is though and just dinks one over the goalkeeper.

Goal:Swansea 1-1 Man City (Doku 39')

Manchester City are level!

Jeremy Doku wheels away in celebration, but boy, did he need a big slice of luck.

He cuts inside and pulls the trigger, but his effort takes a huge deflection and then goes in.

City needed that.

CHANCE! Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace

Better from Palace!

The visitors are starting to build a head of steam and of course Ismaila Sarr is the man causing problems.

He gets on the end of a decent cross and nods the ball toward the top corner.

But he is about a gazillion yards out, so Freddie Woodman has no problem plucking the ball out of the sky.

Arsenal 0-0 Brighton

Well, that's anti-climactic.

Eberechi Eze stands over a free-kick 22 yards out, and you just feel like he is going to whip one top bins.

But nope, he hits the wall and then the ball ends up in the goalkeeper's hands at the end of the next move.

Not been the best of games, here.

'Wolves' confidence is low'

Fans have made their feelings known about those off the pitch, but generally they’re staying with the players. There has been a half-chance for Hwang on the volley and a long-ranger from Agbadou that wasn’t too far wide.
Do these players have the quality, though? That’s an open question, and when confidence is low, it makes life even tougher.

'City complacent'

City’s complacency here is absurd and ongoing. Swansea are swarming all over them and the volume of intercepted passes tells its own story. Bobb and Lewis are struggling, Ait-Nouri was poor for the goal and Khusanov is miles off the pace set by a mid-table Championship club. Guardiola is looking very tetchy down there.

BIG CHANCE! Swansea 1-0 Man City

Oh my word!

Manchester City are ridiculously lucky not to be two down...

They give the ball away at the back from their own free-kick and Melker Widell gets a free run at the penalty area.

He then drills the ball toward the bottom corner, but James Trafford manages to push the effort wide.

That was a real mess.

'Grim times at Molineux'

‘We’re going down’ chant the South Bank as the second goal goes in. There are other unprintable chants too. Wolves hadn’t actually started that badly but the level of Chelsea’s attackers is so much higher. And now we have it – ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ – with not even 20 minutes on the clock. Grim times at Molineux.

CHANCE! Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace

Liverpool are starting to ramp up the pressure now.

Rio Ngumoha manages to drag four or five defenders his way, which allows space to open up for Federico Chiesa.

He finds the Italian, but his drilled effort from a tight angle is beaten away.

Much better this from the Reds.

'Spurs yet to get going'

Good start by Newcastle. Willock and Ramsey's shots were blocked inside the area; Ramsey has been very bright so far. Spurs yet to get going.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

Newcastle are all over Tottenham here.

They are hunting that ball like a pack of Wolves, and Spurs are really struggling to beat the press.

I feel an early goal coming.

BIG CHANCE! Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace

It should be 1-0!

That's the best chance of this game by an absolute mile, and Federico Chiesa knows it.

He looks unlikely to get to a long ball, but somehow beats Jaydee Canvot to the ball, and then he has to score.

But no, he blazes over from inside the box.

Federico Chiesa of Liverpool shoots whilst under pressure from Jaydee Canvot during the Carabao Cup Fourth Round match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Anfield on October 29, 2025 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images)

Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace

Jeeeez, Ismaila Sarr has some serious wheels.

He morphs into a roadrunner down the right-hand side and blazes past two or three Liverpool players.

Honestly, I knew he was quick, but not that quick.

His cross comes to nothing, though, which pretty much sums up this game.

'Palace lining defenders behind ball'

Crystal Palace have a phalanx of defenders behind the ball making it hard for Liverpool to find any space in behind to create chances. A lot of sideways passes and not many chances. And to think I could have been at home in the warmth settling down to watch The Traitors.

CLOSE! Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace

Phoar, that's close.

Rio Ngumhoa has been far and away Liverpool's brightest spark so far - so full of confidence.

He goes all Cody Gakpo, cutting in from the left, and almost curls one top bins from miles out.

But it just flies wide...

KICK-OFF: Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

Off we go on Tyneside.

The holders get the game underway at St. James' Park, and boy, it's loud in there.

A proper atmosphere.

Goal:Wolves 0-2 Chelsea (George 15')

It's two already!

This is just all too easy for Chelsea, they are ripping Wolves apart here at Molineux.

jamie Gittens burns down the left, drills a low ball into the box, and Tyrique George taps home.

Goal:Swansea 1-0 Man City (Franco 12')

Wow, just wow!

Goncalo Franco hasn't just put Swansea in front against Manchester City, he has belted in an absolute crackerjack.

The ball comes to Franco on the edge of the box and he smashes a pearler in off the post.

Who saw this coming? Not me.

'Feels like a pre-season friendly'

It's cold in here but the crowd is being warmed by the contributions of Rio Ngumoha, the 17-year-old winger, so far. He is getting bums off seats at least with several exciting runs. Otherwise, the atmosphere feels a bit like a pre-season friendly.

Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace

Erm... how is that not a yellow card?

Alexis Mac Allister has just turned into prime Maro Itoje, bringing Ismaila Sarr down with a rugby tackle.

But this is football, so it's a foul, although he somehow gets away without getting booked.

Mental.

SITTER! Arsenal 0-0 Brighton

Oh. My. Word.

How is Brighton not ahead?

Now that is what you call a sitter. Stefanos Tzimas can't believe he hasn't just opened the scoring for Brighton.

He is clean through on goal with just the keeper to beat, but he sticks the ball wide of the post.

I reckon I may even have scored that... well, I wouldn't have made the run to score it, but if I was there in the end I would have.

'Spurs name strong side'

I think it's 1-0 Spurs in the battle of the team sheets, and that was the feeling in the press room. In fact, given the strength of the visiting XI, I'm not sure if Eddie Howe would have revised his selection had he known of theirs in advance. But football matches aren't played on paper... and we wait the teams on grass!

'Swansea started brightly'

Once upon a time a trip to Swansea was a weekly thing for me – I covered the entirety of their Premier League era and that was mostly a delight. The football under Rodgers and Laudrup was often delightful.
These days not so much. But they have started brightly here – penned City in their own half for much of the first five minutes. I suspect that will change pretty drastically.

Goal:Wolves 0-1 Chelsea (Santos 6')

Well, that didn't take long...

The 11 changes for Wolves have done nada, they are still pretty rubbish at keeping the ball.

They give it away to Jamie Gittens, who finds Andrey Santos, and he drills the ball into the bottom corner.

The perfect start for Chelsea.

Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace

Liverpool have started rather brightly, I have to say.

These youngsters are showing no fear whatsoever and are showing up their senior counterparts at the moment.

The majority haven't felt the pain of the last few losses, which will help them, I guess.

They are putting the pressure on Palace.

CHANCE! Arsenal 0-0 Brighton

Oooft, decent effort that.

We know that Carlos Baleba can hit them, and boy, he doesn't hang about in the early moments here.

Brighton wins the ball high up in the Arsenal half, and 25 yards out Baleba just decides to have a dig.

He drills one toward the bottom corner, but Kepa Arrizabalaga does well to get down and deny him.

KICK-OFF!

It's go time.

Four of our feature games are underway, from Anfield to Molineux. A big night ahead.

Let's hope we get lots of goals and entertainment, eh?

Agbadou in midfield?

Though mainly a centre-back, Agbadou has played occasionally in midfield, during his time in Belgium and France. He looks the likeliest of the six defenders to start there.

Closing in on kick-off

Right, are we excited now?

Four of our cup games tonight will be starting in five minutes, so surely we must all be buzzing.

I know I am, that's for certain.

The warm-ups are done, the team talks are done, now all that's left is to play ball.

Slot: 'We use this cup for younger players'

Arne Slot, Liverpool boss, speaking to Sky Sports:

People who know this club, who follow this club for a few years know that in this competition we also use this for our younger players. We want to create a pathway for them to play in front of 60,000 people, in front of our own fans. That's one of the reasons.
The other reason is we only have four or five injuries but if I have to play again the same players... there are multiple reasons why we lost so many games - and with all the reasons, still no excuses to lose so many - but it hasn't been helpful that almost every time we had only two days in between the games we had to play after we had to play away from home. And then again an away game.
If we keep playing the same players, like, for example, I tried with Alexander Isak, with players that missed out on pre-season then there is a big risk of another injury and we only have at this moment in time 15, 16 senior players available.

Pereira the joker

Kieran Gill at Molineux:

Vitor Pereira must have a good sense of humour. After Enzo Maresca told us yesterday how much he hates it when opponents surprise him by suddenly playing a back five, Periera goes one further by naming six defenders in his Wolves XI. Fair play, it's a good'un.

Holders continue defence

It feels like just yesterday when Newcastle lifted the Carabao Cup after rinsing Liverpool at Wembley.

Well, it's actually been seven months. Crazy, right?

It appears that Eddie Howe wants to go back-to-back, going by the strength of the team he had named tonight.

Newcastle haven't had the best start to the season, but you can never bet against them on nights like these.

Can they take the next step in their defence tonight?

Third time lucky?

Not another one?

(Please tell me you know that saying/meme)

This is the third time that Liverpool and Crystal Palace have faced off this season... it's October.

So far, it's 2-0 Palace. The Eagles won the Community Shield meeting on penalties, and then beat the Premier League champions at Selhurst Park to start their losing streak.

Going by the team news, it's hard to see Liverpool breaking that losing streak tonight, but I guess you never know in this sport.

Could it be third time for Arne Slot's side?

Has Slot gone too far?

Right, I want to talk about Arne Slot's team selection.

I have seen a lot of angry Liverpool fans on social media, they are not happy with the squad their head coach has selected today.

It's not the weaker starting line-up they are annoyed about, though, no.

It's actually how weak the bench is. He has rested pretty much all the big boys entirely, with the substitutes bench just full of youngsters. There's even a lad named Lucky on there - what a name.

With Liverpool's form so rancid, I really thought Slot would name a strong team to try and get this side back in a winning groove.

But instead, I think they are going to get hammered tonight...

A new Mane in town

There’s not much that makes Wolves fans happy these days but they’ll be pleased to see England U18 international Mateus Mane among the substitutes.
Mane can play through the middle or out wide and is considered the brightest of Wolves’ youngsters by some distance. Fans have been keen to see him given a chance and will hope he leaves the bench tonight.

Dowman makes history

What were you doing at 15 years of age?

I mean, I was trying to sneak out of school lessons to get some Maoam pinball sweets from the vending machines. They were the best, honestly.

But nope, I was not playing senior football...

Mex Dowman, though... he is. By starting this evening, Dowman is the youngest player to start a match for a Premier League side in all competitions (15 years, 302 days), and the first player to do so before the age of 16.

I bet he will shine as he always does.

Newcastle and Tottenham Team News

Now this is what I am talking about.

Holders Newcastle are not messing about. Eddie Howe names an incredibly strong team with Nick Woltemade leading the line.

Thomas Frank, too, has gone strong with Xavi Simons and Richarlison getting the nod.

This could be a belter.

Scene set on Merseyside

I love a big night under the lights.

Just look at Anfield, it looks beautiful on a night like this. It's peaceful now, but won't be for long.

And I just had to add this picture of Diogo Jota's mural outside the stadium, it's beautifully done. He will always be remembered.

Jota was a striker who loved this competition.

'11 changes for Wolves'

We have our answer – it’s 11 changes for Wolves, including six (count them) defenders. What’s intriguing is if Wolves win this, or at least play well, how many will Vitor Pereira retain at Fulham on Saturday?

Return of Ramsay

Who?

I imagine many a Liverpool fan forgot that Calvin Ramsay was still on their books.

I'll be honest, I had...

It's been three years since the Scotsman made his one and only first-team start for the club in this very competition against Derby County.

Since then, he has had loans and injuries, but been nowhere near the Liverpool senior set-up.

Well, until now.

Tonight he returns, and with how Liverpool's right-backs have been playing, it's a chance to stake his claim for a starting position.

Call me crazy, but you just never know.

'Slot has tossed this competition aside'

So the team is out and it's fair to say Arne Slot is not the biggest Carabao drinker. After getting to the final last year, he has firmly tossed aside the competition this year by the looks of his XI in favour of other competitions. Crystal Palace have also made changes but not quite as many.

Wolves and Chelsea Team News

Jeez, a lot of changes in this one.

Out of the two teams, only Josh Acheampong started a Premier League game at the weekend. Quite the exodus.

Liam Delap returns to the bench after his hamstring injury, which is good news for Enzo Maresca.

Swansea and Man City Team News

It's the night of changes, it seems.

Manchester City have made 10, with only Oscar Bobb retaining his place from Sunday.

Still, not a bad team.

Arsenal and Brighton Team News

Lot's of rotation for Arsenal.

In fact, Eberechi Eze is the only player who started against Crystal Palace that keeps his spot.

The big news is that Max Dowman makes his full debut for the Gunners at just 15 years old. Crazy.

Liverpool and Crystal Palace Team News

Yep, that really is heavy rotation.

The rumours are true, Calvin Ramsay does start for the first time in three years, while 18-year-old Kieran Morrison gets his first-ever start for the club.

Oh, and Andy Robertson starts at centre-back and the bench is, well, interesting.

Meanwhile, Oliver Glasner has gone pretty strong with his side, with the likes of Marc Guehi and Yeremy Pino starting.

Who will Slot start?

Right then, let's get our thinking caps on.

If Arne Slot is rotating heavily, then who are the names we can expect to see at Anfield this evening?

I'm guessing the likes of Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo, Andy Robertson, and, of course, Federico Chiesa will play.

But the rest is anybody's guess.

I have seen rumours of forgotten full-back Calvin Ramsay being given the nod to start on the right-hand side of defence, and that would be wild considering he hasn't featured in three years.

But I guess we will see.

'Slot heavily rotating'

Liverpool fans expecting to see the big hitters tonight might be let down — it is a heavily-rotated XI with that to be confirmed soon. Is that the right call by Arne Slot or should he have looked to get back to winning ways? I can see the pros and cons of both arguments.

'Groundhog Day for Wolves'

Groundhog Day at Molineux. We're in one of those periods where either Wolves win, or Vitor Pereira will be answering questions about his future. We've had a close look at what's gone wrong for Wolves here but in the Carabao Cup, they've been OK. I'm fascinated to see what Pereira does with the XI both here and at Fulham on Saturday.

Jeff Shi may have imagined Wolves one day replacing Manchester City at the top of English football. Now, Shi would give everything simply to keep Wolves in the same division.

How strong will Arteta go?

This is the big question.

If Mikel Arteta really does mean business in this competition, then surely he will go with a strong team.

I mean, Arsenal's squad in general is pretty strong, even with all the injuries, so he will be able to rotate and put out a good team.

He is facing a Brighton team that just know how to get something at the Emirates, so this will not be an easy night.

Go big or go home, I say.

Gunning for eight on the spin

Arsenal are on an absolute tear right now.

While Liverpool are faltering with every passing week, the Gunners are flying. They have won their last seven games in all competitions and are on an unbeaten streak of 10.

Let's be honest, when it comes to the Premier League, it is their title to lose now. Yes, I know it's not even November yet, but try telling me I am wrong.

I'm not...

But if years gone by have told us anything, Arteta can't just rely on the Premier League to end his trophy duck.

It's been over five years since Arsenal lifted their last piece of silverware, the FA Cup, and it's the one thing rivals' fans have to banter the Gunners about.

They need to take the League Cup seriously, and getting past Brighton would show huge intent in their desire to win the competition.

Easier said than done, though.

Slot: 'We have to embrace the challenge'

Arne Slot, Liverpool head coach, in his programme notes:

It goes without saying that our recent form has not reached the standards that you expect of us or that we expect of ourselves. This is, of course, a major disappointment, especially given the positive start we made to the season.
From our perspective, there are no excuses. Yes, we are aware of the reasons and we will discuss them, but the one thing we cannot and will not do is use them as an excuse. Our responsibility is to recognise what is happening and put things right. There is no other option.
Part of this process involves being hurt. We should be hurt by results like Saturday's when we lost to Brentford, and we should use the feelings this creates to further fuel our motivation. Not that anyone could accuse the players of a lack of effort – if anything, the opposite is true – but how we use this effort and desire is what will make the difference.
Tonight's fixture gives us an opportunity to take a step forward, not just in this competition but also in our season as a whole. That it comes against an opponent that continues to prove itself to be very strong means this will be a testing cup tie but, again, this is the kind of challenge that we have to embrace.

Can Liverpool stop the rot?

Liverpool are in crisis.

There is no other way to describe it: what seemed like a little blip for the Premier League champions has turned into, well, a monster mess.

They have gone from romping to a Premier League title to losing week in week out despite spending £450m in the summer. It's not even just the results, but rather the performances. They get worse by the game.

Nobody saw this coming, but here we are.

The champions were outsmarted in every department by Brentford on Saturday evening, and the fact that they only lost by one goal was rather lucky. Brentford could have scored five or six.

It was their worst defeat of the lot, and they lost to rivals Manchester United at home the week prior. Yep, the performance really was that bad.

Nobody knows when things will start to turn around for the Reds, but I imagine Arne Slot will be hoping the end of the rancid run starts tonight.

But they are playing Crystal Palace, a team who have caused Slot a whole host of problems since he arrived on Merseyside.

It could be another long night for the Dutchman and his team.

Cup Fever

Help me, help me, I think I have come down with a severe case of Carabao Cup fever.

I'm riddled with it.

OK, OK, I know that's cringe, but I just couldn't help myself. Unlike a lot of people, I blooming love the League Cup.

It's round four time. Last night was the appetiser for what is a mouth-watering main course this evening.

We have some monster games in store, with Tottenham visiting Newcastle, Brighton heading to Arsenal, and Liverpool hosting Crystal Palace. Oh yeah, and that isn't even all of it.

I'm telling you, a seatbelt will be needed on what could be the rollercoaster of a night in the cup.

I have mine on, so let's get this show on the road.
