Beth Mead pays glowing tribute to Sarina Wiegman after Lionesses boss reached landmark in 8-0 win over China

Beth Mead paid tribute to England boss Sarina Wiegman after the 8-0 Wembley win over China gave her a 50th victory in charge.

Mead hit two goals in three first-half minutes to get the ball rolling, with Georgia Stanway bagging a hat-trick and Lauren Hemp, Ella Toone and Alessia Russo also on target.

England were playing their first match at the national stadium since Wiegman led them to a second European Championship title in Switzerland earlier this year.

'Sarina makes coaching look very easy,' said Mead. 'She is an amazing coach to play under and work for and you see that from how the team play under Sarina.'

Mead's double took her to 39 England goals, one behind Fara Williams who is fifth on the all-time Lionesses goalscoring list.

'I like being in front of goal and getting goals so that was nice,' added the 30-year-old Arsenal forward.

'I thought we put together a lot of good goals and put each other in really good spaces so I am happy to get them too.

'We were very good - we have had a habit of not starting well in games at the moment and we wanted to do that, and we did that.

'It was nice to see lots of different goalscorers, lots of people getting minutes, and come away with a big win.

'It wasn't our hardest game, we know that, but you play the team that is in front of you, you work hard and we made them look very average.'

There were question marks over Mead's future at Arsenal over the summer, but she is proving to be a key figure for club and country once again.

'I think she has always been a smart player,' said Wiegman. 'She picks up positions, she's very calm in the final third and always keeps seeing pictures in the final third.

'What we invited her to do even more is to make more rotations, pick up other positions and feel the freedom to do that, and that's what she has started doing a little bit more.'
