Brian Kelly was not in shoulder pads and a helmet for LSU when he got knocked to the ground in a scary fall after colliding with a referee on Saturday night.
The $10million-per-year Tigers head coach was standing feet from the playing area with the official backpedaling to watch the pass thrown by Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik.
With Kelly's eyes also on the play, the official ran right through Kelly, sending him spiraling to the turf.
The pass fell incomplete as Kelly regained his surroundings and was on all fours.
Several LSU assistant coaches immediately ran over to check on their boss and help him to his feet.
Kelly was thankfully fine after the on-field collision, continuing to lead LSU to a 17-10 win over Clemson, in one of the most-anticipated matchups of the first full week of the college football season.
LSU head coach Brian Kelly took a scary fall when colliding with an official on Saturday night
Kelly was standing near the field when the collision occurred with him ending up on the turf
Collisions between officials and coaches like this are not typical, as the referees have the right of way on that part of the field.
Kelly was standing far away from the original play, as it was a downfield heave from Klubnik that led Kelly to be in harm's way.
Some fans have thought it could have been a penalty on Kelly, 63, as the collision was avoidable and he made contact with an official.
Yet, it was the first-such instance from Saturday's game, should it have been called in the first place, leading to a warning. Only the second violation would lead to a penalty against LSU.
LSU will likely skyrocket in the rankings after taking down the No 4 team in the country, with Clemson, a fellow national-title contender, sure to drop with the season-opening loss.
