American cyclist Neilson Powless invoked his inner 'Chris Froome' as he was spotted running up the road following a mechanical issue with his bike.

Powless was competing in the Maryland Cycling Classic in Baltimore when he suffered from an ill-timed puncture - leaving him in need of a new rear tire.

The EF Education-EasyPost rider was toward the front of the pack when the tire went flat, but the mishap meant his race had come to an end.

After being offered a neutral bike and rejecting it, Powless spotted his team car ahead of him on the course.

However, rules from the UCI state that neither a rider or a vehicle can go backwards on a course.

So, in need of continuing his race, Powless lifted up his bike - without one wheel - and started running up the road to reach the car.

Eventually, the team member delivered a bike to him and Powless continued his race.

Spotting his team car ahead, Powless started running up the road to get a replacement bike

Powless would ultimately finish 18th in the race, coming in over five minutes behind winner Sandy Dujardin.

Following the race, Powless addressed the hilarious incident on his Instagram account: 'Felt incredible to restart my season at the Maryland Cycling Classic.

'Unfortunately an untimely flat in the final lap kept me out of the fight for the win. Thank you Baltimore for having us and to everyone who made this race happen!'

Cycling fans may have felt deja vu from watching Powless' run up the road, as many drew comparisons to an incident in the 2016 Tour de France.

In Stage 12 of that year's Tour, British rider Chris Froome collided with Australian Richie Porte, Dutchman Bauke Mollema, and a motorbike after spectators on the road  up Mont Ventoux forced the motorbike to stop.

While both Porte and Mollema were able to continue riding, Froome was forced to jog up the famous mountain until he could get a replacement bike from his team car.

Froome would go on to win his third of four Tour de France titles in 2016.
