Transfer News LIVE: All the done deals as Alexander Isak, Jadon Sancho and more forced last-minute moves plus updates on the deals that fell through, including Liverpool's Guehi blow

1 week ago 2

Follow Daily Mail Sport's live blog following the aftermath of the 2025 summer transfer deadline day for Premier League clubs.

How will Guehi be feeling?

I wonder how Marc Guehi is feeling right now.

The bloke has been incredibly professional all window, continuing to play at his very best for Crystal Palace while having his heart set on a move to Liverpool.

And despite being Mr. Nice Guy in this window, doing everything right, and being the model pro, his dream move collapsed.

Meanwhile, both Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa threw their toys out of the pram and got what they wanted.

What does that say for the state of our beautiful game?

'Chance Reds go back in for Guehi in Jan'

Lewis Steele, Daily Mail Sport:

Don't want to get into the territory of discussing future windows already but sources say Liverpool's admiration of Marc Guehi is incredibly strong and they will remain open to the chances of signing him in either January or next summer, when he will most likely be a free agent.

Will Reds go back for Guehi in January?

Many may think that Marc Guehi's move to Liverpool is dead in the water after what happened last night, but I assure you, this is not the last we will hear of this saga.

We have to remember that he only has a year left on his Crystal Palace deal, so his dream move to Liverpool may not be completely over.

The Reds could either go back in for him in January, and for less money, or agree a free transfer for next season.

I imagine they may face some competition in the future, but that shouldn't stop them from being in pole position.

We could still see Guehi in red at some point in the next year.

Guehi deal to Liverpool collapses

Liverpool's transfer window may have been the best of the lot, but it could have been even better.

Around 3pm yesterday, they agreed a £35million deal to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who then underwent a medical.

So, why was he not on the list of deals I wrote a couple of posts ago, surely he signed, no?

Well, it all went Pete Tong as the evening progressed.

Oliver Glasner kicked up a fuss with Steve Parish, reportedly threatening to walk away from his role as manager if Guehi left. That, combined with the fact that Palace had not found a replacement for their skipper, meant the south Londoners pulled the plug on the deal at the eleventh hour.

I can see it now, Guehi in his new Liverpool tracksuit, ready to sign a deal to move to the Premier League champions, only to get a call to come back to Selhurst Park as the deal was off.

Pretty brutal.

Reds break spending record

I still find it hard to believe that Liverpool is actually spending this much money; it's mental.

This is the same club that spent just £12.5m last summer on one player, and now they are throwing their chequebook about like they are in a Las Vegas casino.

All good business, of course, but still crazy.

Once the Alexander Isak transfer went through, they broke the record for money spent in one window, which was previously held by Chelsea at £400m - the amount they spent in the summer of 2023.

Liverpool spent £446m this summer, including all add-ons.

Liverpool the window winners?

I mean, what a transfer window Liverpool have had.

I know Liverpool fans who tore Richard Hughes apart verbally after only signing Federico Chiesa last summer, but now he is their hero.

Funny how times change.

Looking at the window that Liverpool have had in full, it's clear just how incredible it has been... surely they have done the best business in the Premier League this summer.

That being said, it's cost them more than a pretty penny.

Here are their new recruits in full:

  • Alexander Isak - £125m (British record)
  • Florian Wirtz - £116m
  • Hugo Ekitike - £79m
  • Milos Kerkez - £40m
  • Giovanni Leoni - £26m
  • Jeremie Frimpong - £29.5m
  • Giorgi Mamardashvili - £29m
  • Armin Pecsi - £1.5m
  • Freddie Woodman - Free

Total: £446m (inc. add-ons)

Newcastle's brutal 37-word statement on Isak

You know, when a player makes a transfer, the club he is departing from typically wishes them well and gives thanks for their contributions to the club.

'No hard feelings' is a phrase that comes to mind.

Well, we all know that Alexander Isak's situation is not normal, and there certainly are some hard feelings toward him from a Newcastle perspective.

The club showed exactly what they thought of their now former striker with an excruciating 37-word goodbye message, in which they didn't even wish him luck.

I mean, fair. He has kind of screwed them over.

Howe: 'I have admired Wissa for some time'

Eddie Howe, Newcastle manager, on the signing of Yoane Wissa:

Yoane is a player who we have admired for some time and we're delighted to have him on board. He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by his goalscoring output but also the crucial work he does for the team.
Yoane's style of play will excite our supporters and complement our style of play - he has pace, power and an excellent work rate. He immediately makes us stronger.

Wissa follows in Isak's footsteps

It really was a crazy summer, wasn't it?

Alexander Isak was not the only player to throw a hissy fit over not getting a move; initially, Yoane Wissa did the exact same thing.

The funny thing is, he went AWOL in order to force a move to Newcastle and become Isak's replacement.

It was a domino effect that affected Liverpool, Newcastle, and Brentford.

Wissa also opted to release a statement about his wishes to leave the Bees, citing broken promises, just like Isak. Although his statement went on forever, taking up pages of Instagram stories.

In the end, he too got what he wanted and is Newcastle's new No. 9, with the Geordies splashing a mammoth £55m on the forward, who had just a year left on his Brentford deal.

'What's wrong with Isak wanting Reds move?'

Joe Hart, former Man City goalkeeper, on Radio 5 Live:

I know it is not nice how Alexander Isak has conducted himself, but trust me if Newcastle wanted it to go the other way they would have stomped all over him. I have seen it so many times in football.
If football was fair then he acted unacceptably. If everyone honoured their contracts, football clubs included, this is how we are going to do it, equal opportunity, play while you continue to get paid and then shake hands, great.
But everyone knows it doesn't work like that. We have all been stomped on when it suited someone else. What's wrong with Alexander Isak standing up and saying, 'I want to go to Liverpool'?

'Isak’s move proves loyalty is unenforceable'

Oliver Holt, Daily Mail Sport's Chief Writer:

If Isak can get himself out of Newcastle, a club owned by a repressive nation state whose rulers are not exactly shy about dealing uncompromisingly with dissenters, then it can happen anywhere. Isak’s move sends out a message that loyalty is not just dead. It’s unenforceable.
Isak’s transfer underlines the fact that this was the summer when players cut themselves free of the last remaining structures that govern employment and loyalty in the game and proved that they have the power to move where they want when they want.

Inside the Isak stand off

There has been one man on top of all things, Alexander Isak, across what has been a mental summer, and I think you all know who he is.

Yep, our very own Craig Hope.

He was the man who broke the news that Isak wanted to make the switch from the north east to the north west, and ever since, he has been relaying all the critical information during the saga.

It's fair to say that he has won over a lot of fans with his handling of the dramatic transfer, on both sides.

Now, if you want to know the full story of how this saga unfolded, Craig has released a piece on everything that happened behind the scenes at Newcastle.

It's a fascinating read - I highly recommend.

Isak: 'I want to win everything'

Alexander Isak, Liverpool's record signing, speaking to the club website:

I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.
It’s mixed emotions – some relief but a lot of pride, happiness. I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.
It has been a long summer but I’m just looking forward, not looking at the past. It’s done now and I know I can get back to doing what I love the most. Really looking forward to it. I want to win everything.

Isak gets his move

The saga of the summer finally has its conclusion.

39 days after Daily Mail Sport exclusively revealed that Alexander Isak wished to explore a move away from Newcastle, he was unveiled as a Liverpool player.

I'm not sure there is much else to it, is there?

Hopefully, you all detected my sarcasm there because the story of Isak's move will forever be one of the most dramatic tales in transfer window history. My word, it was mental.

The Magpies were desperate to keep their main man, even when he turned into a petulant child and threw all his toys out of the pram, threatening to never play for the club again, and missing all of pre-season. Newcastle's stance seemed to be clear: he was not for sale.

Well, unless Liverpool bid the right fee and they could find two strikers. So, it wasn't really that clear of a stance, let's be honest.

It was a deal that went to the wire, with Isak's Instagram statement doing nothing to help his cause, but in the end, Liverpool got their man for a British record £ 125 million.

It's fair to say, the Reds now have the scariest attack in world football.

'Donnarumma better than Trafford'

Chris Sutton, former Premier League striker, on Radio 5 Live:

Do I think Gianluigi Donnarumma is a better goalkeeper than James Trafford? Absolutely. [They say] Donnarumma can't use his own feet? I'm afraid he can use his feet and he has used his feet.

Pep's keeper dilemma...

Pep Guardiola is currently swimming in goalkeepers.

At the start of the window, it was obviously a position where Manchester City needed to improve, but my word, they went keeper crazy.

They brought in three, while letting Edesron and the mighty Scott Carson go, although the latter is still at the club in a coaching capacity.

These are the four goalies fighting for one position:

  • Gianluigi Donnarumma
  • James Trafford
  • Stefan Ortega
  • Marcus Bettinelli

Penny for Trafford's thoughts

I wonder how James Trafford feels right now.

The young goalkeeper thought it was finally his time to shine at Manchester City, returning to the club two years after leaving to gain more experience.

With speculation over Ederson's future, he was chucked in at the deep end in Manchester City's Premier League opener against Wolves, and he didn't just doggy paddle; he swam.

Trafford put in an excellent performance at Molinueux, which in turn led to starts at home to Tottenham and then away at Brighton. The No.1 keeper position seemed like it was his.

Sure, he has made some mistakes - the one leading to Spurs' second was a howler - but he is young and will only improve with minutes on the pitch. He still has what it takes to be a top keeper.

But now, after just a month as first-choice, it seems like his development will be stunted by the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma. There is no way that the Italian is coming to Manchester to play second fiddle.

Did Trafford make the right decision returning to City? I'm not so sure.

Viana: 'We are thrilled to have Donnarumma'

Hugo Viana, Manchester City's director of football, speaking about Gianluigi Donnarumma:

Gianluigi’s pedigree, quality and record speaks for itself, and we are all absolutely thrilled he has joined us here at City. He has accumulated a wealth of top-level experience and knows what is required to achieve success on a sustained level.
From a remarkably young age, he has played at the very top level. That is unusual for a goalkeeper and it means he arrives here as one of the best in the world in his position.
There is no doubt Gianluigi will bring further quality and depth to our top-class goalkeeping department. Everyone here is very excited to welcome Gianluigi to Manchester City and we wish him all the very best during his time here with us.

Donnarumma: 'A special move for me'

Gianluigi Donnarumma, new Manchester City goalkeeper, speaking to the club website:

To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me. I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.
I have admired watching Manchester City for many years - so to now be able to play for the club is a huge honour and a privilege. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates, the staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very, very special for me.
I am very excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the club achieve even more success.

Donnarumma completes City move

About time, eh?

Manchester City didn't have build suspense by waiting to announce the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG.

You would have expected them to have done it last night, given that the window was slammed shut at 7pm. But nope, they left their fans waiting until this morning, which feels cruel.

In the last hour, City finally announced that they have signed the Italian international for £26m, with the goalkeeper signing a five-year deal at the club.

The move allowed Ederson to leave Manchester and have a trophy-laden eight-year stay at City.

The Brazilian has signed for managerless Fenerbahce.
