Steven Gerrard cheekily tells Nottingham Forest star he is needed at Liverpool after being quizzed on his transfer future on live TV

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard told Neco Williams he is needed at Anfield after the Nottingham Forest star was quizzed on his future. 

Former Reds academy star Williams, 25, won a penalty as Forest held Andoni Iraola's side to a 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon, with the new Liverpool boss still searching for his first competitive win.

Williams has been a standout performer at full-back in the Premier League in the past two seasons and his strong displays have naturally seen interest mount in securing his services.

Daily Mail Sport reported earlier in the window that Williams features on a list of transfer targets for Manchester United, while Newcastle are also admirers of the Welshman.

And Gerrard told Williams on TNT Sport 'we need full-back cover here' as Lynsey Hipgrave grilled him on his future, with question marks hanging over the quality of current full backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. 

That comment triggered a polite laugh from the 25-year-old, who insisted his focus remains on Forest.

'Listen every day I'm focused on the badge I'm wearing right now and that's Forest and that's all I can do. 

'Of course it's nice to see that teams are showing interest but at the end of the day I'm a Forest player and I am focused on what I'm doing here.'

Gerrard's impromptu comment comes after United legend Peter Schmeichel was emphatically shot down by Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle when he asked the Toon manager about Lewis Hall's future.

'I think it will be a stressful period for the sporting director, because we have some needs.

'But if we bring players in maybe there will also be some players who go out.'

Former Man United keeper Peter Schmeichel, who played 398 times for the club, then cheekily said: 'We are looking at your left back.'

That comment was in reference to Hall, with United having made enquiries for the defender this summer.

But to that, Jaissle said: 'No chance, no chance,' as he chuckled.
