Legendary NASCAR executive and former longtime president of Charlotte Motor Speedway, H.A. 'Humpy' Wheeler, has died aged 86.
The news was confirmed on Thursday afternoon, with a statement revealing that Wheeler passed 'peacefully of natural causes, surrounded by loving family'.
The legendary promoter helped revolutionize NASCAR over his 33 years at the helm and transformed the North Carolina track into a global racing destination.
He was also the voice behind Tex Dinoco, a Cadillac Coupe de Ville in Pixar's hit film Cars and sequel Cars 3, which might resonate with younger racing fans.
Tributes poured in from across the NASCAR world following news of his death, including from NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France, who praised Wheeler's transformative legacy.
'Humpy Wheeler was a visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport,' France said.
