Jamie Vardy set to sign for Serie A's joint-leaders after leaving Leicester City - after snubbing a Premier League legend's offer from elsewhere

Jamie Vardy is planning to travel to Milan this evening ahead of beginning a new chapter in his career with Serie A Cremonese.

The 38-year-old is a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season.

A number of clubs including the likes of Napoli, Celtic and Everton have all shown interest in the former England international but he has been convinced by Cremonese's ambitious project in Italy's top flight.

They are second in the table after just two games having started with a surprise win over AC Milan and 3-2 victory over Sassuolo on Friday.

They are also in talks to sign Brighton winger Jeremy Sarmiento.

Vardy has an offer of a one year contract with option for a further year with the Lombardy-based club and is scheduled to travel to Italy on Sunday evening ahead of signing barring no last minute offers from elsewhere.

Dutch giants Feyenoord were one of the teams pursuing a deal to sign Vardy on a free this summer.

The former England striker has courted interest from across world football this summer, and Feyenoord boss Robin van Persie was determined to bring him to the Eredivisie.

Van Persie is understood to have been prepared to make Vardy the highest-paid player in Feyenoord history, though crucially only on a one-year deal.

The Dutchman began his glittering playing career at Feyenoord, and was appointed head coach of the club in February after first stepping into the dugout with fellow Dutch side Heerenveen.

Upon Van Persie's arrival Feyenoord had won just one of their last five league games as Danish boss Brian Priske struggled to live up to Arne Slot at the De Kuip.

After Van Persie was named his successor, the club enjoyed a strong end to the campaign, finishing third and securing a place in the Champions League qualifying round.
