Hockey is back, but NHL fans have been disheartened to learn that one of their favorite analysts is no longer covering the game with ESPN.
Ryan Callahan, the former captain of the New York Rangers, revealed on social media that he is no longer working for the broadcaster.
Writing on X, the 40-year-old explained on Tuesday: 'For all those asking, I am taking a step away from ESPN this year.
'It has been a great four years with the worldwide leader in sports. I’m going to miss working with all the great people there, but I wanted to spend more time with my young family.
'Excited to tune in tonight to see the start of what should be another great NHL season!'
There had been questions about Callahan's ESPN future earlier in the week, with the broadcaster announcing a list of contract extension without mention of the ex-NHL man.

Callahan has been married to wife Kyla since 2011 and they have three children together.
And there were plenty of viewers disappointed to learn that Callahan would no longer be on his screen.
'PLEASE do some part time color commentary for the Rangers,' one fan wrote back to Callahan.
Another said: 'Thanks for all the years of watching you play and watching you as broadcaster! You have a much deserved rest ahead.'
A different fan replied to Callahan saying: 'Come back when you’re ready! You’re great on TV, Cally.'
If Callahan thought that more time on his hands meant he could enjoy watching the Rangers as a fan, he was left disappointed on Tuesday night.
It was a hard start to the season at Madison Square Garden, with the Rangers losing 3-0 to Pittsburgh Penguins.
They return to action on Thursday night against Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center.
