College athlete, 20, dead after collapsing at cross-country practice in Texas

A Texas college athlete has died after collapsing at the start of cross-country practice, Odessa College confirmed in a heartbreaking statement.

Gage Broomall, a 20-year-old student-athlete from Hallsville, Texas, was beginning a training session on Thursday afternoon when he suddenly collapsed. 

Despite the quick response of emergency personnel, he tragically did not survive.

Broomall was in his second year at Odessa College and a member of the Wranglers' cross-country team.  

In a statement, the college said: 'Gage was a valued member of the Odessa College Wrangler family, and his loss is deeply felt by his teammates, coaches, classmates, and all who knew him. 

'Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.'

To honor his life and legacy, the college and the Broomall family have launched the Gage Broomall Memorial Scholarship Fund, with donations being accepted online.

News of his sudden passing has stunned the Odessa College community. Grief counselors have been made available to students and staff, and tributes have begun pouring in on social media from fellow athletes and friends.

No official cause of death has been released at this time.

Details regarding memorial services will be announced in the coming days, the college confirmed.
